Everett Addition
Everett, WA — Residential Concept Design
The Everett Addition is a conceptual detached accessory dwelling unit designed for a retired veteran in Everett, Washington. Conceived as a modest rental residence, the project explores how a small addition can provide financial support while remaining respectful of the existing home and neighborhood context.
Early in the process, a site study was conducted to confirm zoning and setback requirements and to determine the feasibility of an accessory dwelling on the property. These constraints informed a design strategy inspired by the mechanics of a telescope—one that widens as it extends away from the existing residence.
The addition expands outward to accommodate the scale of the original home while creating a small courtyard between the two structures. This outdoor space serves as a buffer, providing both visual and acoustic privacy for the existing residence and the new dwelling.
The interior layout is designed to support a small family, with bedrooms located along the northern edge of the property to enhance privacy. A central corridor establishes a clear division between public and private spaces, reinforcing legibility and efficiency within the compact footprint.
